Recent years have seen a tremendous increase in scientific literature on social networks. The term "network" is now widely used in several situations. The scholarly community is increasingly interested in the institutions that impact our social and economic life.
Matthew Jackson's volume on social network analysis (SNA) emphasizes that networks facilitate human connection. They influence the spread of knowledge and people's decisions. Human networks follow stable and predictable norms, even as they become increasingly complicated over time. Adopting a network perspective is critical for understanding human behavior.
The editors of this edition convened a workshop titled "Networks, Behavior, and Strategies in Early Financial Markets" at Stockholm University in October 2022, which resulted in enlightening conversations among the contributors. 5 This volume emphasizes the significance of networks and the usefulness of using a network approach to study historical events. The chapters mostly focus on credit transaction networks. The book features multiple contributors who are experts in financial history. Their research spans from 15th-century Europe to 18th-century North and South America, analyzing diverse types of credit, both intermediated and non-intermediated.
To create a framework, authors in this volume analyzed historical interpersonal credit transactions through a network lens, selecting the most appropriate approach based on data and research topics. The book's diverse topics, places, times, and approaches make it an intriguing read. But it also presents a challenge. This variant deepens the conversation on historical SNA by providing a review of several exploration methods, including qualitative and data-driven approaches to networks using big datasets.
However, this offers a dilemma as it may jeopardize our efforts to develop a common methodological framework. Overall, our findings indicate SNA's adaptability to various sources, periods, and research questions.
