Cara Menemukan Gap Penelitian: Analisis 5W1H

 

1. What (Apa Itu Gap Penelitian?)

Gap penelitian adalah kesenjangan atau ruang kosong dalam pengetahuan ilmiah yang belum banyak diteliti atau belum terjawab secara memadai oleh penelitian sebelumnya. Identifikasi gap sangat penting untuk membangun kontribusi baru dalam ilmu pengetahuan (Robinson & Lowe, 2020).

Gap dapat berupa ketidakkonsistenan hasil riset, kurangnya studi di konteks tertentu, keterbatasan metodologi, atau isu-isu terkini yang belum direspon penelitian. Misalnya, dalam bidang keuangan digital, terdapat banyak penelitian tentang mobile banking, tetapi masih sedikit yang membahas penggunaan blockchain dalam inklusi keuangan di negara berkembang (Zhang & Chen, 2021).

Dengan kata lain, gap penelitian adalah “alasan utama” mengapa penelitian baru perlu dilakukan.


2. Who (Siapa yang Menemukan dan Menggunakan Gap Penelitian?)

Pihak yang paling sering mencari gap penelitian adalah:

1. Mahasiswa – mencari gap penelitian untuk menulis skripsi, tesis, atau disertasi.

2. Dosen & Peneliti – mengidentifikasi gap untuk publikasi di jurnal bereputasi internasional (Scopus, WoS).

3. Institusi Riset & Pemerintah – menggunakan gap penelitian untuk menyusun kebijakan berbasis bukti (evidence-based policy).

4. Jurnal Ilmiah – memprioritaskan artikel yang memiliki kontribusi baru melalui gap penelitian yang jelas (Nguyen & Pham, 2020).

Contoh: Mahasiswa S2 bidang manajemen di Indonesia menemukan bahwa ada banyak riset tentang e-learning di negara maju, tetapi masih terbatas studi empiris di Indonesia. Gap ini bisa menjadi dasar penelitian tesis yang relevan.


3. When (Kapan Gap Penelitian Dicari?)

Gap penelitian dicari pada fase awal penelitian, yaitu saat penyusunan latar belakang dan kajian pustaka. Identifikasi gap dilakukan sebelum merumuskan masalah penelitian agar penelitian memiliki justifikasi akademik yang kuat (Creswell & Guetterman, 2021).

Biasanya gap penelitian muncul ketika:

Menyusun literature review.

Membaca hasil penelitian terbaru dan menemukan keterbatasan.

Menghadiri seminar/konferensi dan melihat isu-isu yang sedang berkembang.


Contoh: Pada masa pandemi COVID-19, banyak penelitian cepat dilakukan di bidang kesehatan. Namun, masih sedikit studi tentang dampak psikologis jangka panjang terhadap mahasiswa. Itulah gap yang bisa diteliti.


4. Where (Di Mana Gap Penelitian Bisa Ditemukan?)

Gap penelitian bisa ditemukan di berbagai sumber akademik, seperti:

Artikel jurnal internasional (Scopus/WoS) → bagian “limitations” atau “future research”.

Disertasi/tesis → biasanya memuat rekomendasi untuk penelitian berikutnya.

Database penelitian seperti ScienceDirect, Springer, Taylor & Francis.

Google Scholar → bisa digunakan untuk melihat tren sitasi dan area yang masih sedikit diteliti.


Contoh: Dalam artikel jurnal Renewable Energy (2022), penulis menyatakan bahwa masih sedikit riset terkait “green sukuk” di Asia Tenggara. Pernyataan ini dapat dijadikan dasar untuk penelitian baru.


5. Why (Mengapa Gap Penelitian Penting?)

Ada beberapa alasan mengapa gap penelitian penting:

1. Kontribusi Ilmiah – penelitian tanpa gap hanya akan mengulang apa yang sudah ada (Li & Yu, 2021).

2. Nilai Publikasi – jurnal bereputasi tinggi seperti Elsevier atau Springer lebih menerima artikel dengan novelty yang jelas.

3. Efisiensi Riset – gap penelitian menghindarkan peneliti dari penelitian yang redundant.

4. Dampak Praktis – gap bisa mengarahkan penelitian untuk menyelesaikan masalah nyata.


Tanpa gap penelitian, sebuah karya ilmiah sulit dianggap bermakna.


6. How (Bagaimana Cara Menemukan Gap Penelitian?)

Langkah menemukan gap penelitian (Aithal, 2020):

1. Lakukan Review Literatur Sistematis – baca artikel terbaru dari jurnal bereputasi.

2. Identifikasi Konsistensi & Inkonstistensi – apakah ada hasil yang bertentangan?

3. Perhatikan Bagian “Limitations” – hampir semua artikel menyarankan penelitian lanjutan.

4. Cari Tren Baru – isu terkini (AI, green finance, digital health) bisa jadi gap.

5. Gunakan Tools Bibliometrik – misalnya VOSviewer untuk memetakan tren riset.


Contoh: Dari 50 artikel tentang digital banking, ditemukan bahwa hanya 5 artikel yang membahas “adopsi AI di perbankan syariah.” Itu bisa jadi gap penelitian.

1. Memberi kontribusi nyata pada ilmu pengetahuan (Robinson & Lowe, 2020).

2. Memudahkan publikasi di jurnal internasional (Li & Yu, 2021).

3. Membantu mahasiswa menyusun skripsi/tesis yang relevan.

4. Memberikan dasar kuat untuk penelitian aplikatif.


⚠️ Kelemahan & Tantangan

1. Membutuhkan banyak waktu untuk membaca literatur (Nguyen & Pham, 2020).

2. Tidak semua gap bisa diteliti karena keterbatasan data.

3. Risiko salah interpretasi (menganggap ada gap padahal sudah diteliti).

4. Terkadang gap terlalu luas sehingga sulit dipersempit menjadi masalah penelitian.


🔎 Contoh Kasus


Bidang Manajemen: Banyak penelitian tentang kepemimpinan di perusahaan besar, tetapi sedikit tentang UMKM → gap bisa diteliti untuk skripsi manajemen.

Bidang Keuangan: Green Sukuk banyak diteliti di Malaysia, tetapi masih jarang studi di Indonesia (Zhang & Chen, 2021).

Bidang Pendidikan: E-learning banyak diteliti di negara maju, namun belum banyak kajian di pedesaan Indonesia (Rahman & Putri, 2022).
