This book is the result of the System of Promoting Appropriate National Dynamism for Agriculture and Nutrition (SPANDAN) project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and hosted by the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai. The SPANDAN initiative aims to explore and analyze the connections between agriculture, nutrition, and health in India, with the broader goal of supporting the country’s progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG-2). Specifically, the program focuses on:
-
Building an Evidence Base to deepen understanding and enhance agriculture–nutrition linkages in India.
-
Assessing the Impact of targeted agricultural programs and policies on nutritional outcomes.
-
Advocacy, by presenting research findings to inform and influence existing as well as emerging policy platforms.
A key feature of SPANDAN is its interdisciplinary collaboration, involving specialists in fields such as development economics, agricultural economics, applied econometrics, clinical nutrition, gender studies, law, and anthropology. Through this partnership, the project draws on diverse expertise to address shared research concerns. Each contributor and collaborating researcher has previously worked independently on topics related to agriculture, consumption, gender, and nutrition, building a substantial knowledge base. The collaborative effort is expected to generate deeper insights into these interrelated areas, enabling policymakers to better understand and address the complex relationships among agriculture, consumption, and nutritional well-being.
The studies featured in this book were commissioned by IGIDR through either open calls for research proposals or direct invitations. All selected studies were presented at three different workshops and underwent expert review at various stages—project inception, mid-term, and finalization—providing valuable feedback and recommendations to the authors.
